2000: 2% CONSTRUCTION GROWTH IN UK

Construction in UK will only rise with 2 percent in the year 2000 according to European Construction Research. This is partly the result of a weak export, partly because of the strong Pound and the crisis in Asia. The construction sector constitutes ca. USD 104 billion.

There will only be decline in some sectors and not general decline, because of the relative low level of the construction sector following a number of years with decline in the late 80s and 90s.

Towards 2006-2010, a number of large assignments will be presented, because the technological and social development in the labour market poses further demands to the premises, and the growth rate will rise.

The development of construction

(growth in percent per year)

Following a major decline in the beginning of the 90s, the growth in construction is positive again in the UK. Towards the year 2000, this tendency will continue if the general development of the economy in Europe is stable. In spite of the low growth in the individual sectors with only 1-2 percent, the total result means a decent growth in construction. The culmination of this will be around 2006-2007, when a number of sectors will experience a stronger growth because of a renewal of the real estate volume as well as the expected progress in world trade
